The Difference Between a Wedding Ring and an Engagement Ring

Many people are confused about how a women's wedding ring differs from her engagement ring. The answer narrows down to when you give the ring to your partner and how the ring looks.

Engagement rings are given during a proposal and typically have a more intricate design featuring one center gemstone and possibly even diamonds framing the center stone. A wedding ring is given during the marriage ceremony and is often a simple, classic design.

Many women wear their wedding ring and engagement ring simultaneously, but not everybody chooses to do this.

The History of Women's Wedding Rings

Wedding rings are a tradition that has been around for centuries, dating back to ancient Egyptian civilizations. The Egyptians would trade rings made from reeds and hemp. They chose to place these rings on the fourth finger of the left hand because they believed a vein connected directly to the heart from this finger.

These rings were a symbol of devotion, love, and partnership. The Egyptians believed that the endless circle of the ring was an unspoken promise of forever.

This tradition was adopted by the Romans and the Greeks, who would trade rings made from bone and leather. In these cultures, blacksmiths started making iron rings, and the idea of a wedding band originated.

The wealthy people among the Romans and Greeks wore gold and silver bands, and these metals began to symbolize marriage.

Couples started customizing their rings in the 15th century, and they would engrave the bands with figures of the two getting married.

Wedding rings became more complex as time progressed, and in the Medieval era, these pieces of jewelry began featuring hands clasped in love.

While the design of wedding rings has transformed over the years, the meaning has remained the same. These bands and diamonds symbolize an everlasting bond between two people. They represent the lengths you would go to for the person who completes you.

How to Find the Perfect Women's Wedding Ring

No two women are the same, and we keep that in mind when designing unique wedding rings. There are so many different factors that come into play when choosing the perfect wedding ring for your partner, so we've put together a guide just for you!

What Setting Should You Choose?

We design our diamond wedding rings for women with a few different settings. A setting is how a diamond is secured to the wedding band. This element is crucial in picking the right wedding ring for your partner. Here are descriptions of different settings:

  • A pave wedding ring features tiny diamonds along the band. Many of our diamond wedding rings for women have a pave setting.
  • A prong setting typically has a few metal prongs extending over the gem to hold it in place. This particular setting offers more security for the diamond and allows light to enter the stone. We have also designed some of our wedding rings with this setting.
  • A channel setting features two metal walls that hold the stones between them on the ring's shank. Some of our women's wedding bands have a combination of a pave and a channel setting. This combination gives you the sparkling beauty of a pave setting with the security of a channel setting.

What Cut Should You Choose?

At King of Jewelry, we have a few different cuts you can choose from. Let's discuss the benefits of each.

  • The marquise cut can make the diamonds appear larger. This cut has 56 facets and takes the shape of an ellipse. Marquise cut diamonds are a perfect choice for women with longer fingers.
  • Round cut diamonds have a specific brilliance that is almost unmatched. The symmetry of this shape maximizes the stone's light through 58 facets. Round cuts are a prevalent choice among our customers.
  • The princess cut is highly desired because it hides blemishes and inclusion. It is also very modern and only recently became trendy in the 1970s, yet somehow encaptures a timeless effect.
  • An emerald cut features long facets that provide light flashes instead of a constant sparkle. Many people prefer this and choose a diamond with an emerald cut. This shape also has clipped corners that make it more durable than other cuts.
  • The baguette cut is a thin, elongated shape better as accent diamonds than a center stone. The baguette only has 14 facets but still works brilliantly in a three-stone setting.

What is an Eternity Ring?

You'll notice that many of our wedding rings for women are eternity rings. An eternity ring is a band that features tiny diamonds along the entirety of the circle. These symbolize infinite love and an unbreakable bond. Most of the diamond rings in this collection are half eternity rings, meaning the gems only line half of the band.

How Do I Know Which Diamond to Pick?

To the untrained eye, all diamonds look the same initially. Don't worry - we're here to help you analyze the differences in our gems.

Women's wedding rings should be judged by four different factors. These include color, cut, clarity, and carat.

Diamond colors are labeled by letters, and the scale starts with D. D, E, and F are all considered colorless by the GIA. The absence of color is actually better, and these three ranges indicate a higher quality diamond. G, H, I, and J are all considered near colorless as you continue down the scale. These are the second-best options, and many of our wedding rings for women are in the F-H range.

Cut is also considered in the GIA report and spans from poor to excellent. All of our diamonds are GIA certified and have excellent cuts.

Clarity refers to the absence of blemishes and inclusions. In other words, it measures how many flaws the diamond has. These are labeled as VVS, VS, SI, and I. VVS and VS refer to the diamond having very few inclusions, while SI and I describe a diamond with visible blemishes.

Many of our diamonds have VVS and VS clarity.

Lastly, carat refers to the physical weight of the diamonds. The higher the carat, the more valuable the diamond is. Our collection of diamond wedding rings for women have all different carat sizes.
